The ship CO2 surcharge is imposed by ship operators to compensate for CO2 emitted during the sea crossing.
The reference CO2 price for each month (EEX EUA End of Day Index Price in €/tonne) is taken from the 16th of month N-2 until 15th of the month N-1. It is adjusted with a discount reflecting the use of biofuel (-2% on EU-EU routes and -1% on EU-UK routes) and also for EU phase-in period (-30% in 2025) and for routes to/from the UK (a further -50%). The CO2 surcharge on individual routes is then calcualted by multiplying the CO2 reference by a 'trade factor' for each route.
