Starting as an Apprentice Port Operative has been a great introduction to a career in port operations. From the beginning, I’ve been treated as a valued member of the team, working alongside experienced operatives, supervisors, and ship crews in a live operational environment.

The apprenticeship offers real hands-on experience from day one. My role includes carrying out safety-critical equipment checks, supporting vessel operations on the berth, and moving cargo across the terminal. I’ve already built confidence driving tugs and am progressing onto translifter training, gaining exposure to moving large and complex loads — experience that few roles offer so early in a career.

I’m trusted to work independently, but there’s always guidance available from knowledgeable trainers and colleagues so I can develop my technical skills and confidence at the right pace.

This apprenticeship provides more than just qualifications — it delivers real-world experience, and a pathway into port operations. For anyone looking for a hands-on career in a professional and safety-focused environment, this is an excellent place to start.

Starting as a Graduate Management Trainee on the Level 5 Operations Management Course has been a good way to launch my career. From the start, I’ve been exposed to multiple areas of the business, learning directly from experienced managers while gradually taking on responsibility in a real operational environment.

The variety of the role keeps every day interesting. I’ve gained hands-on experience in port operations, including placements across different locations. This has given me a broad understanding of best practices and how large-scale shipping operations run efficiently and safely. The apprenticeship has helped me develop transferrable skills such as communication, time management, problem-solving, and leadership.

The combination of on-the-job training, guidance from colleagues, and structured learning opportunities ensure you’re always growing in your role.
